Copilot for Excel is the automation deep-dive. It turns repetitive spreadsheet work into VBA macros, Office Scripts, Power Automate flows, and Python in Excel — described in plain language, generated by AI, and always reviewed by you. Some of it needs Copilot inside Excel; a lot of it you can do with any AI chat and a copy-paste.
Who it’s for: people in the Microsoft 365 world who want to stop doing the same Excel task by hand and start automating it.
Good to know — three ways in, checked against Microsoft’s official docs. Pick the one that fits your account:
- VBA with any AI chat — the works-on-any-plan path. Ask any assistant (even the free Microsoft Copilot, or ChatGPT / Claude) to write a macro, then paste it into Excel’s VBA editor and run it. No paid Copilot and no business license needed — it works in Excel desktop on Windows. (Excel for Mac runs VBA with some limits; Excel on the web has no VBA.)
- Office Scripts & Power Automate — the business path. Office Scripts (and scheduling them with Power Automate) require a business or education Microsoft 365 license. Per Microsoft, Office Scripts is not available on Personal or Family plans.
- Copilot inside Excel — the Microsoft-native path. The built-in Copilot pane needs a paid Microsoft 365 plan that includes Copilot (Personal, Family, or Premium; or the business/enterprise add-on) and AutoSave on, meaning the file is saved to OneDrive. The free Microsoft Copilot is a separate chat and does not work inside your workbook.
